A Turkish Woman from the Uyghur,
Digital Animation, Activism, and Book Design, 2017

For this project, I created a fictional character named, Shu Sultan Demir who is a Turkish Chinese from the Uyghur. Uyghur is  a Turkic-speaking Muslim minority that considers this region its homeland, located in Northwestern China. This region is under severe crackdown on Muslim. Government makes policy which is tougher security and tighter restraints on the practice of Islam. Government also supports Han migrant as a plan to dilute Uyghur’s identity. Shu sultan Demir’ father is Turkish immigrant and her mother is Han-Chinese. During this project, I interacted with Turkish people, exposing myself to a value and standards that was unknown to me while sheding light on Uyghur minorities and their crisis by introducing them to the world.
